New Smyrna Beach, FL – AÂ massive dredging project involving the Intracoastal Waterway and Ponce De Leon Inlet channel is almost finished.
Beginning this week, dredging will begin on a round-the-clock schedule seven days a week, according to Volusia County spokespersonÂ Kate Sark.
The project should be completely sometime by mid-February, barring any kind of sever marine weather or debris that might be encountered on the river bed.
Sark says that once the project is completed, it will have removed around 450,000 cubic yards of clean sand from the ICW and the Ponce De Leon Inlet navigation channels.
The dredged sand removed from those areas is being placed in a nearshore area along the beach about a mile south of the Inlet.
According to Sark, the sand will help nourish the active shoreline of New Smyrna Beach.
An additional 10,000 cubic yards of material was also dredged from the Coast Guard Station at Ponce Inlet.…read more
